Some friends and I went to the Glenbow Museum today to visit the "Jean-Paul Riopelle and the Glory of Abstract" exhibit. Riopelle was one of Canada's greatest artists and the leading abstract artist of his generation (1923-2002). He paints luscious thick impasto and I was impressed with the technique. Most of the paintings in this exhibit were from 1950's.
We also viewed "The Painter as Printmaker - Cezanne, Degas, Manet and Van Gogh". These prints seemed dark and gloomy to me and lacked feeling, even though I know they took hours to produce.
